THE WITCH OF THE WOODS – FINAL YEAR PROJECT – CODIE FRANCIS

For my final project at Teesside University, I decided to design and create a pair of game-ready character inspired by witches and nature. Since the intention was for these character to be used in real-time, I took extra care in the polycount and the topology.

At the start of the project, I had no clue as to what the character I would make would be, but I began to collect a wide amount of images of outfits, particularly vintage dresses from the mid-1800s to early-1900s, various object, plant-life, and whatever happened to catch my eye to help inspire me. From there I realised what I wanted the characters to be, so I created thumbnail sketches to test out designs, before expanding some of them into my final designs.

I wanted to incorporate plants into the human character to give an otherworldly quality to it, which I feel work to give the character both a sense of mystery and a unique identity and silhouette.

This project has allowed to me expand my skills in various aspects of character creation. For the human character, I got to make use of Maya’s XGen to create hair planes, and expand my hard-surface skills in ZBrush. For the tree character, I got to practice with foliage and sculpting plantlife in ZBrush.
